Skin cancer occurs when skin cells grow abnormally and multiply in an uncontrolled way in the outermost skin layer. This is caused by DNA damage that triggers mutations. Skin cancer affects people of all skin tones, including those with darker complexions.

What Causes Skin Cancer?

The skin cancer is caused by ultraviolet (UV) light, mutations in the skin cells. There are three types of UV light found in Sunlight.

Ultraviolet A (UVA): Ultraviolet A has a longer wavelength and it is associated with skin aging

Ultraviolet B (UVB): Ultraviolet B has a shorter wavelength and it is associated with skin burning

Ultraviolet C (UVC): it is most dangerous to the skin but is filtered out by the Earth's atmosphere.

  1. A change in your skin is the most common sign of skin cancer.
  2. A new spot on the skin.
  3. Changes in the size, shape or colour of an existing spot. A red- or skin-colour shiny bump on the top of the skin.
  4. A growth with a raised border and central crust or bleeding.
  5. A non-healing sore that bleeds or develops a crust.
